Apple Watch Series 12 and Apple Watch Ultra 4 both add a Readiness app, and it answers with two things at once: a single score from 0 to 10, and one of four recommendations worded Recover, Pace Yourself, Ready or Go For It. Apple’s Readiness support document, published September 14, joins them: 0 to 1 is Recover, 2 to 4 is Pace Yourself, 5 to 7 is Ready and 8 to 10 is Go For It.
Apple says the score is built from recent activity, training load, vitals and sleep, that it arrives each morning and that it updates during the day. Its support document sets out which scores produce each of the four verdicts, but it does not say how the inputs are weighted against each other.

The four words, and what Apple attaches to them
The four recommendations are the part of Readiness most people will actually read, because they are written as plain instructions rather than as numbers. Apple’s support document gives each one a score range: Recover for 0 to 1, Pace Yourself for 2 to 4, Ready for 5 to 7 and Go For It for 8 to 10.

The closest thing to an explanation of the purpose sits in Apple’s own announcement quote. Kaiann Drance, Apple’s vice president of Worldwide Apple Watch Product Marketing, said Series 12 “gives you meaningful insights, like readiness, so you can better understand how to take on your day and care for your health.” That describes the intent, not the method.
It is worth being precise about what the score is not. Apple claims no regulatory clearance for Readiness in any of its September 9 materials, and a low number paired with the word Recover is not a diagnosis of anything. Apple labels its Vitals app, which feeds the same picture, as being for wellness purposes only and not for medical use.
The 0 to 10 scale, line by line
Set out as a list of questions a reader would reasonably ask about a number between 0 and 10, Apple’s published material answers four of them and leaves the rest open.
| Question about the scale | What Apple publishes |
|---|---|
| Lowest and highest value | 0 and 10 |
| Number of recommendations | Four |
| Value that triggers each recommendation | Recover 0 to 1, Pace Yourself 2 to 4, Ready 5 to 7, Go For It 8 to 10 |
| Whole numbers or decimals | Not published |
| Whether scores are comparable between people | Not published |
| Days of data the first score needs | Overnight vitals set up, and the watch worn while sleeping for at least 7 nights |
| Whether the score appears without a recommendation | Not published |
| Whether the recommendation can be turned off | Not published |
Where the number turns up
On the watch, Apple lists Readiness as a new app on both the Series 12 and the Ultra 4 product pages. On iPhone, readiness is one of six summaries Apple names for the Insights tab in the redesigned Health app, alongside heart, sleep, fitness, vitals and cycle tracking.
Those two arrive on different schedules. watchOS 27 is free on Monday, September 14. The redesigned Health app is dated only later this year, starting in US English, and Apple says it needs an iPhone or iPad that supports Apple Intelligence.
What Apple has not said
- How recent activity, training load, vitals and sleep are weighted inside the score.
- Whether the score is reported in whole numbers or to a decimal place.
- Whether any Apple Watch other than Series 12 and Ultra 4 gets the Readiness app.
- Any accuracy figure, validation study or regulatory clearance for Readiness itself.
watchOS 27 arrives free on Monday, September 14, and Series 12 and Ultra 4 reach stores on Friday, September 18, so the first real scores land in the days after that. Apple’s support document says a first score needs your height, weight and age in Health Details, Activity and Sleep set up, and overnight vitals with the watch worn while sleeping for at least 7 nights. Our event recap and Series 12 preview cover the rest of the announcement.
